I love to rescue quilt blocks or unfinished quilt tops from antique stores or second hand shops and give them new life! I don't know the reason the original maker gave up on this project, but if I had to make a guess it's because none of the blocks were the same size! I have no idea how the blocks were meant to go together, so I made up my own pattern. Interesting things I found while working on this quilt top from the early to mid 1900's: 1. Some of the blocks were hand pieced, others were machine pieced and some were a combination of hand and machine piecing. 2. There was not a specific size of block and some of the star points were bigger than the star points in other blocks. 3. None of the seams were consistent, i found 1/8" seams and 5/8" seams and everything in between! I had all sorts of stories running through my head on why they were all sewn differently. Was there more than one person working on the quilt? Did they get a sewing machine halfway through the project to explain why some were hand pieced and some were machine pieced? Why 37 blocks? Were there supposed to be more or had she made extra? Also, why was it never finished? Did she get too busy to finish it? Was she bored with the project? Did the person who started it pass away before they could finish it and their family didn't know what to do with it? I sure wish I knew the background story on the quilt! Maybe I'll have to make up a story to go with it! If you have any theories, let us know in the comment section!
