Taurine is an amino acid found in high concentrations in the brain, skeletal muscle, heart, white blood cells, and the eye's retina. This review discusses the research on the role taurine plays in healthy aging. As people age, their level of taurine declines. Compared to younger people in their 20s, people in their 60s have about an 80% reduction in taurine levels. In one study, taurine increased the average lifespan of mice between 10% and 12%. It also appeared to increase bone density, reduce liver enzymes, and lower fasting blood sugar by 19%. Taurine has antioxidant and antiinflammation effects. Lower taurine levels are also seen in metabolic disorders such as type II diabetes. When researchers analyzed the health records of almost 12 thousand people, higher taurine levels were associated with less type II diabetes. However, both higher -and lower- taurine concentrations were associated with lower inflammation as well as reduced BMI and body weight.
