However you should never eat your chia seeds like this or it may harm your health. 1. Never eat chia seeds directly There had been a news about a 39-year-old man who almost choked to death after eating a tablespoon of dry chia seeds followed by a glass of water. The seeds, which can absorb up to 27 times their weight in water, apparently expanded post-ingestion and completely blocked the man's esophagus. That’s why you should never eat chia seeds dry. You should soak chia seeds in water or any liquid to let them expand fully before consuming them. 2. Check with your doctor first if you are taking blood thinners or blood pressure medications Chia seeds act as a blood thinner due to its high content of omega 3 fatty acids. Although chia seeds are safe for most people, you should check with your doctor first if you are taking blood thinners or blood pressure medications, as chia seeds may interfere with your medications and cause harmful side effects. 3. Avoid consume chia seeds with diabetes medication The high fiber content in chia seeds is responsible for slowing down our digestive system, which results in the lowering of our insulin resistivity and also lowers the blood’s glucose level. Thus, it is advised to not consume chia seeds while on your diabetes medication, as it can lower your blood glucose level beyond its normal point. 4. Never eat chia seeds excessively Although chia seeds are highly nutritious, you should consume them moderately as eating too much of it may cause side effects. Excessive intake of chia seeds can cause problems like abdominal pain, constipation, diarrhea, bloating and gas. You should not eat more than 3 tablespoon of chia seeds every day.
