Did you know that one of the breakthroughs in understanding light therapy occurred because NASA was looking for a way to grow potatoes in space? Engineer Ron Ignatius used light-emitting diodes (LEDs) to grow plants in space. The LED technology, primarily using red and blue light to drive photosynthesis, was instrumental in growing potatoes on the space shuttle in 1995. What wasn't planned was when the NASA scientists started noticing that abrasions on their hands seemed to heal faster when exposed to these LED lights. This was especially unusual because the body's natural healing processes generally work slower in space. This accidental discovery led NASA to explore the medical potential of red and near-infrared light. Now, years later, Theragun has just introduced their newest recovery massage gun with a built-in red light therapy feature. Even I'm on Instagram under the lights talking about how I get this treatment weekly. So, again, is it all that? I mean, they're just lights. Why can't I wrap myself in red Christmas tree lights and get the same effect for a lot less money? Proper red light therapy requires specific wavelengths to be effective, typically between 600 and 850 nm, with the right intensity to penetrate the skin. Regular red bulbs, heat lamps, or LED strips are not designed for therapeutic purposes. Red light therapy appears to have such a wide range of benefits because of how it works with the body. By targeting the body at the cellular level, it stimulates the mitochondria to produce more energy in the form of adenosine triphosphate (ATP), which is essential for just about every bodily function. In addition to supporting skin health and hair growth, research has indicated that red light therapy can assist in athletic performance, improve recovery, stimulate nerve regeneration, reduce joint painโ€”and the list goes on. If you're looking to give it a try, give us a call, and we'll have you looking as cool as I do in no time.
