Risk factors: Women of childbearing age Recent weight gain/obesity Medications (eg, retinoids/vitamin A, tetracyclines, growth hormone) Pathophysiology: Impaired CSF resorption & intracranial venous hypertension Signs / symptoms: Headache/nausea/vomiting Visual changes (transient obscurations; vision loss; diplopia due to abducens nerve [CN VI] palsy) Pulsatile tinnitus Retrobulbar pain/neck pain/back pain Diagnosis: Papilledema & enlarged blind spots MRI to rule out mass lesions/hydrocephalus MR venography to rule out venous thrombosis Lumbar puncture: elevated opening pressure Treatment: Weight loss, including bariatric surgery Carbonic anhydrase inhibitor (acetazolamide, topiramate)
