After digging out my denim jacket for spring, I was both horrified and embarrassed when I couldn’t do up the buttons. I have spent the last 12 months in denial that I am far heavier than l’d like to be. A winter of baggy jumpers and elasticated leggings has concealed the fact that at 11st 6lbs, I am now half a stone heavier than I was when I was full term with each of my sons. That’s right, I weigh more now than when I had an 8lbs 5oz human growing inside me. I’m not really one for fad diets. I prefer real food over shakes and I have always been active. In fact, pre-Covid I was a regular at the gym, doing three or four spin classes a week. But overeating and boozing were bad habits that continued post-lockdown and I can no longer use the pandemic as an excuse for my weight woes. With a sunshine holiday just around the corner, I wasn’t prepared to buy a whole new wardrobe, let alone fork out for a replacement denim jacket — I just had to lose weight. “I’ve managed it before,” I told myself. It is true, at my heaviest I weighed 12st 8lbs and was a size 14, which at 5ft 7in, is almost 2st over what I would like to be. After three long months of upping my exercise and lowering my calorie intake, I managed to lose an impressive 16lbs.
