In this episode of Abbey’s Kitchen, Abbey is joined by her RD partner in crime: Abby Langer. The two of them are on a mission to try the many Detox teas out there and find out if they’ll actually help you lose weight. Teatoxes are very popular and have become the newest trend to help you cleanse your body of all of the toxins. Abbey has got a spoiler alert for you: Your body is pretty cool and doesn’t need a tea to cleanse itself. If you’ve got two kidneys, a liver and a lung? You’re already cleansing, you’re doing good. Drinking water alone is enough to help you cleanse, so you don’t need to go and add a skinny tea bag in water to help. The reason these detox teas “work” is because they are either diuretics or laxatives so you’re not losing fat, you’re just losing water weight. Abbey and Abby read through the instructions of one of the teas and notice that there are a ton of grammar mistakes which is not a good sign at the start. Remember that just because it says it’s natural, does not mean the product is safe. These teas could give you electrolyte imbalance or a heart attack. Some of these teas also contain a substance known as senna leaf, and some research has suggested that consuming senna leaf over three months may lead to liver damage. Let’s give them all a try. They are starting with Limming Special Tea. This tea contains senna which is a laxative and it also contains a few diuretics. Abbey’s not a fan of black licorice so she is not loving the flavour of this tea. Next up is Pukka Detox. Again, we’re seeing licorice root because it’s a natural diuretic. They are not liking the smell of this and are trying to pinpoint what it smells like… Next is Roasted Dandelion Spice Detox. Abby used to eat dandelion flowers when she was a kid, so this tea may be a winner for her. This tea has a urine like smell and according to Abby and Abbey it doesn’t taste great. Next up is Dukan Diet Slim Tea. This tea has got green tea, organic horsetail and parsley. Parsley is a diuretic but you’d have to consume a lot of it for it to work. The packaging does state that this tea be used in programs that recommend less caloric intake and more physical activity. So what’s really helping you lose weight? You’re eating less and exercising more or the tea? Abbey finds this tea smells better and tastes better but would not pay that kind of money for it. Next is Uncle Lee’s Body Balance Lemon Dieter Tea. This tea contains a lot of Senna. It contains 1360 mg of Senna which sounds like a shit bomb. Abbey thinks is smells like what will come out of you after drinking this tea. Abbey and Abby agree it smells like horse stables. Next up is Everyday Detox. Again, we’re seeing the same diuretic ingredients like dandelion root. Abbey recommends drinking lemon tea instead. Finally, Abbey and Abby are trying the last tea: Detox Skinner Herb Tea. This tea contains senna leaf and they both agree is smells like poo. Abbey feels that she is prepping for motherhood with this poo tea. Abby refuses to drink it. Abbey and Abby are glad they’ve cleared this up, and basically don’t waste your money on tea detoxes. Water is just as good and any kind of tea that you enjoy is just as good. Your body is so incredibly intuitive and cleanses itself every single day without you even know it.
