The subject of Body Dysmorphia is important and I don’t think it is discussed enough before having weight loss surgery. For me, it was actually the hardest part of the weight loss process, mostly because I was just not prepared for it. I hope that this video can shed some light on the subject and let people know that others have been where they are, and hopefully help people know what to expect during the weight loss process. I also want people to know that men are not immune to having these feelings. With men, it may not even manifest with them wanting to lose weight, a lot of times men want to gain weight and/or build muscle. Because of that, a lot of men aren't diagnosed with any type of body dysmorphic disorder. So a lot of us have a poor body image and this can stem from many reasons, such as our childhood, media, or other factors. After a large weight loss we may become hyper-focused on our weight and/or start looking for other flaws or imperfections. We can become so focused on losing weight that we may begin to fixate on things that make us feel insecure. Oh, and let’s be honest, the loose skin, stretch marks, uneven weight loss, and so on, do not help matters. So as we are losing weight we are seeing friends, family, and co-workers who are commenting on your weight loss. That feels good, right? Well yeah, but it also trains you to think that people are always looking at your body, looking at your weight, and so on. You begin to look at yourself in the mirror more, buying things to make you look better while also trying to cover up your perceived flaws. You start picking those flaws apart which can put you in this cycle of anxiety and self-loathing. This inner voice telling you to cover up your flaws becomes louder and you start making attempts to quiet it. Excessive exercising, drastic diet changes, and even plastic surgery can begin. But even something as drastic as plastic surgery does not change anything, because even after plastic surgery, we are still not perfect, and getting rid of one flaw only makes you fixate on another. You may even start to isolate yourself from your friends and family. I want to stress that if you feel that you are suffering from an eating or body dysmorphic disorder, I encourage you to seek professional help. I have provided some links and phone numbers to some resources below, but there are many more that may even be local to you. You are not alone in this and there is no shame in asking for help.
