Depression and medications used to treat depression all have impacts on anesthesia and surgery. Wellbutrin is an effective and safe medication, however, all medications have side effects, and the side effects can be more pronounced in the operating room. In the case of Wellbutrin, a lower seizure threshold can predispose, or increase the risk, of seizures. This is why you should mention all of your medications to your doctors before surgery. Fortunately, anesthesia medications are the antidotes to seizures. This is why I typically do not recommend stopping Wellbutrin before surgery. However, this risk/benefit depends on every individual patient, and this is absolutely not medical advice! You should always speak with your doctor before surgery to make the determination of which medications to continue. Mental health matters, in particular before surgery!
